Short stories
An appraisal of a short story is of most value when we know which market you’re
aiming at. Short story requirements for women’s magazines, for example,
are very different from literary magazines, or competitions.
We will conduct basic research of your chosen market before
reviewing and this is included in the cost. For us to do this,
we need you to include details of which market it’s aimed
at when you submit.
Up to 2,000 words: 1 review £48; 2
reviews £68; 3 reviews £88; 4
reviews £99
Over 2,000 words: 1 review £65;
2 reviews £85; 3 reviews £99;
4 reviews £120
Please note competition entries are very difficult to gauge.
Nothing can prepare the writer more than reading entries by
previous winners and runners-up, although if the judges change
every year, even this method has its limitations.
If your short story is for a competition, then to help us
in reviewing your work please let us have the website details
of the competition when you submit – there is a space
for this information on the Submission Form. Please allow plenty
of time!
We can’t guarantee that, even if we think your story
is good enough to be published, or to take a prize in a competition,
that it will in fact do so. However, a Fiction Feedback appraisal
might be able to suggest how you could improve your story which
will in turn improve your chances.

Plays
We have a number of reviewers with a specific background
in this area so we’re delighted we can offer our
appraisal service for stage or radio plays. (Sorry, no
film or TV scripts.)
We
offer the standard critique service at the same prices
as for extracts of novels, for up to 60 sheets of A4, double-spaced,
with 2.5cm margins and type-size of 11 point or larger. (We
don’t give a wordcount for plays because of their very
different format from a novel.)
Up to 60 pages: 1 appraisal £65;
2 appraisals £85;
3 appraisals £99; 4 appraisals £120
This is probably
a little over half the length of a play with a running
time of 3 hours. You can include a 2 x A4
page synopsis
if you like. The 60 pages must be contiguous, and we recommend
they’re the first 60 pages – a publisher, director
or radio producer will always be most influenced by the
first few pages, so it’s sensible to include these.
If
you would like us to supply appraisal(s) for your play
in its entirety, different rates apply.
61 to 120 pages:
1 appraisal £99; 2 appraisals £149;
3 appraisals £199; 4 appraisals £249
If
your play is longer than this, please email
us for a
quote.
